AiraEarth uses best-in-class scientific knowledge on oxalogenic plants which have the capacity to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, turning into tiny minerals in the soil. This process known as biomineralisation provides multiple environmental, social and commercial co-benefits.
We are implementing this approach to agroforestry, restoring degraded land with productive plantations for cacao, coffee, sugar cane with our oxalogenic plants, while sequestering carbon, improving soil health, and enhancing biodiversity and having a significant social impact.
At AiraEarth, we are proud to collaborate with The Playa Viva B corp eco-resort in Guerro, Mexico, to implement agroforestry systems. This project aims to work with local communities to restore degraded lands and provide sustainable livelihoods – while permanently removing carbon.
The project unfolds in three strategic phases:
Initiation with 10 hectares focusing on setting up the first agroforestry systems.
Expansion to an additional 40 hectares, building on the initial success and scaling up
Targeting the restoration of up to 353 hectares, driven by local community support and ecological potential.
Funds are utilised across various critical areas to ensure the project’s success:
Establishing multi-strata systems with high carbon-sequestering species such as the Brosimum alicastrum tree (uje), cacao, and other native plants.
Conducting workshops and training sessions for local farmers on regenerative practices, carbon monitoring, and sustainable land management.
Enhancing biodiversity, improving soil health, reducing erosion, and conserving water through innovative agroforestry designs.
Supporting local cooperatives, in particular, the Rio Tule Women’s Cooperative, in producing and marketing organic products, thereby boosting local economies and promoting gender equality.
The project aims to sequester substantial amounts of carbon:
– Organic Carbon: Up to 87,644 tonnes over 20 years.
– Inorganic Carbon: Approximately 3,627 tonnes through biomineralization processes, ensuring high permanence of carbon removal.
The project incorporates rigorous monitoring of carbon indicators and environmental impacts, validated through ISO-compliant methodologies. This ensures transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement over the 20-year lifespan of the project.
